FAQ
Your questions
Everything you need to know before you take on the Postman’s Challenge.
Is this a race?
No. It’s a heritage round you can walk or run, in one go or in stages. Posting your round is optional.
How long is it?
About 14.7 miles (23.7 km) by GPS, often rounded to 15.
How much climbing is there?
About 600 metres.
How long does it take?
A steady run takes around 3 to 3½ hours. Walkers should allow a full day.
Do I need a special app?
No. Any free tracking app works: Strava, Garmin Connect, OS Maps, Komoot or similar.
Where do I start?
At Birchwood Cafe on Main Street, Shap. Please start and finish there, and support the café. Park in the village.
Is it waymarked?
No. You need to navigate with a map and compass and follow the current rights of way. Take care near Shap Abbey, where the path has been rerouted.
What if the river is high?
The round finishes over stepping stones at Stepps Hall. If the river is in spate they may be impassable, so follow the road from Thorney Bank to the A6 instead.
Can I swim?
You can, with care. Beside the waterfalls on the climb to Mosedale there are deep pools that are hard to resist on a hot day. The water is cold and you’re a long way from help, so swim only if you’re confident, and never alone. The scramble up beside the falls has no set path.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes, under control. This is livestock country.
When’s the best time to go?
It’s well suited to winter and days of poor visibility, when the high fells are off-limits. In summer the bracken and grass can be thick.
How do I get a finisher’s pin?
In person at Birchwood Cafe, with your finisher photo. See Post your round.
Who do I ask about the round?
Use the contact form. Please don’t call the café with route questions.
